Blocking Rogue Websites by Using HOSTS File

What is a HOSTS file?
The HOSTS file provides the instructions for the web browser on how to open a certain website when the user types in the address. The website opens if no record about it is found in the HOSTS file. If, however, a record of a requested website is found, the web browser then opens a website from the IP address found on the HOSTS file.
Why do I need to block websites?
Modifying your computer’s HOSTS file is the best way to block malicious websites. These websites might become a problem if your system becomes infected with browser hijackers that come with malware or spyware programs. Browser hijackers redirect your web browser to rogue websites that may cause some serious problems. Not only these websites advertise fake software or promote various online scams, but they might even infect your computer with system parasites without you being aware of it. So it is very important to block these malicious websites in order to keep your computer safe.
How to block rogue websites by using HOSTS file
Find and open the HOSTS file.
You may find the Hosts file in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc.

Open the file using WordPad or any other text editor.

Type in the website you want to block.
The entry must include two elements – the IP address and the website address that you want to block. Type in 127.0.0.1 for the IP address, leave a space and then type the website address. 127.0.0.1 is the IP address of your computer, if the address leads to 127.0.0.1, the website cannot be accessed. This is an example of how to block antivirsystem.com

If a browser hijacker tries to open antivirsystem.com, a blank page on your browser will appear instead.
