Fake AV Spreads in a New Way

A new way for spreading malware was discovered. The fake antivirus creators and distributors are very inventive because last week was found some fake antivirus spreading via a fake Firefox/Flash Player update site according to Avira .  

Avira warns that rogue antivirus authors spreading malware by using an old-fashioned spam emails with the subject: “Review your annual Social Security statement”.

The fictitious attachment name “statement.zip” which contains the malware “statement.exe“ is carried out via spam emails.

Moreover, the file downloads two other binary files once the attachment is executed. One of the displayed files is „Security Tool“ malicious antivirus scanner and other is a backdoor.  Avira is detecting the fraudulent antivirus as TR/FakeAV.HA and the backdoor component as BDS/Reberi.A.

Security Tool is well known as a rogue anti-spyware which displays numerous security threats and various fake warning messages. Application has to be deleted upon detection with reputable security software .
