By Jason on February 5, 2010 | Vulnerabilities, Firefox, Mozilla, Zango, fake

ESoft has confirmed, Zango spyware Toolbar was used as a cover for targeting users of Mozilla's Firefox with fictitious browser updates.

Providers of fake software are able to use reputable programs illegitimately connecting their software into the install of well known software. These programs are not necessary malicious, but is always unwanted by users. What is more, those programs are gaining to collect information about user without users knowledge.

One of those examples was recently found on the fraudulent Firefox download site. ESoft states, that cleverly fabricated website run “Hotbar” toolbar by Pinball Corp formerly Zango. The update page looks identical to the peculiar page, however, you can notice few misspellings and wrong version it is offering (3.5 where the most recent is 3.6). Window users are tricked to download and install fabricated toolbar that also hits the user with pop-up advertisements.

It should be noted that proprietor of fraudulent Firefox page is not associated with Pinball Corp and only using its pay-per-install advertisement for getting easy money.

Don't loose your vigilance and make sure you are installing genuine software. At this point it should be noted that the unthoughtful thing is not the new toolbar application, but the way it is distributed by a separate entity and installed under fabricated pretenses.
