On weekend, Google updated Chrome search engine for computer users that Microsoft flagged as malware. Google released update the day after Microsoft announced theirs antivirus programs identified Chrome browser as the Zeus botnet Trojan.
After such a discovery Microsoft deleted the "chrome.exe" file on some users' Windows computers. Victims also reported that they were not able to reinstall the browser and after they tried to do it, they had lost all browser bookmarks.
Google also provided Chrome browser restore tutorial in their blog post and an update was released to assist this process.
Google’s spokeswoman commented: "The team rolled out another update of the Chrome stable and beta builds to ensure that users who may have had their Chrome executable deleted due to the faulty [Microsoft Security Essentials antivirus] updater would receive a new update of Chrome.“ She also added: “We rolled out new builds so that assuming [users'] MSE tools were updated and they received the new Chrome exe, their browser would be restored.“
Microsoft didn’t comment about the impact of its mess up of Chrome’s bookmarks. However, they apologized for all the chaos and implied that about 3,000 Chrome users had been affected by the flawed antivirus update.
