Misleading email letter from iTunes confuses its users
By Gina on December 23, 2010 | Phishing, iTunes, fake email letter, phishing attack
iTunes customers may have been having counterfeit email letter from the company itself saying that iTunes account may be suspended.
The message reads: „Dear iTunes Customer, it is possible that your account password has been stolen. 4 different IP addresses have been used to login to your account within the last 24 hours. Please visit the bellow link and read what to do and how to contact support department“.
This email reminds a phishing attempt. However, it differs from usual emails and claims that iTunes will never ask you for your password or any confidential information. It seems like cybercriminals gains to have user‘s trust and forces them to click on a provided links.
This phishing attack doesn’t look like a usual one because even if it has misleading web page, however, it doesn’t ask any personal information for user to enter. Do not fall for this even if it looks like legitimate at first site. It isn’t so. The site secretly provides malicious script which tries to use vulnerabilities in older versions of Java and Windows Help. In this way it seeks to spread malware into the system.
Users that have security software to protect their machines are safe from this attack. Others should protect their computers as soon as possible if they want to prevent phishing attacks.
