Much More Malware in 2009
By Gina on January 7, 2010 | Malware
PandaLabs, the anti-malware lab of Panda Security have announced in their annual report that they have identified 25 million new malware threats during 2009. The number comes even more shocking having in mind that the total amount of malware strains detected in the previous 20 years altogether was 'only' 15 million. The rapidly increasing number should be perceived as a huge warning to all the internet users worldwide.
The tendencies show that the biggest number of malware attacks were committed by trojans and were in most cases headed towards the users' online banking credentials. The most popular among these kind of trojans was the Zeus trojan.
The most common malware distribution method in 2009 was through social networks, such as Youtube, Facebook and Twitter. People should be very careful when they click the links they receive on social networks, because any notification coming even from one's friends might contain malicious applications. Therefore, the constantly increasing number of malware threats and social network users might cause even more cybercrimes being committed in 2010.
However, those who don't want to get their personal data or online banking details to get stolen by criminals, should simply obtain a reliable antivirus tool and keep its virus database updated. Running constant system scans is also important. With 55,000 new malware samples being identified each day keeping one's computer secure is just crucial.
