On Thursday Oracle released an emergency update that patches Java virtual machine. Tavis Ormandy who was first to discover this threat commented that he alerted Java handlers inside Oracle's Sun division, but they decided no patch was necessary before the next update release scheduled for July.
Recently released Java 6 update 20 , which makes changes to the Java Network Launch Protocol. There are also information leaks that this update doesn't terminate these threats. A researcher who asked not to be disclosed said there may be upgrade troubles with the npapi plugin used by Firefox. However, an Internet Explorer should be safe.
There should also be mentioned that Java updates reset some default settings. It seems like this new update for Java virtual machine is a quite smart move, but Oracle still has unfinished work to make Java patching more seamless.
