Patch Tuesday fixes 22 flaws
By Gina on August 11, 2011 | Computer Security, Patch Tuesday, computer security, 13 patches, fices 22 vulnerabilities, two critical bulletins
Microsoft has released 13 patches for 22 vulnerabilities. Two of 13 patches are rated a top ranking of critical on Microsoft‘s rating scale. These two are of the most dangerous and the rest of 13 are identified as second highest rating and moderate ones.
Wolfgang Kandek chief technology officer at researcher Qualys commented: „MS11-057 is critical and affects all Internet Explorer versions including the newest IE9. Attackers can take complete control of a computer by setting up a malicious web page and attracting the victim to the page“.
Moreover, this month’s bulletins include fixes for reported bugs in Internet Explorer, Windows, Office, and Virtual Studio, among others. Even if two critical among 13 bulletins, one of them is an update for two vulnerabilities in Windows DNS Server. If this vulnerability gets exploited by cybercriminals it may lead to remote code execution.
Furthermore, one of bulletins is addressed to patch a hole in Remote Desktop Web Access, specifically a cross-scripting (XSS) vulnerability. By enabling the XSS filter in Internet Explorer 8 and 9 may prevent remote code execution as well.
