Scammers utilize the closing of Megaupload
By Bryan on January 25, 2012 | Phishing, megaupload attack, scammers attack, fraudulent site
You might already heard about this – one of the largest file sharing sites Megaupload.com has been closed down by the U.S. government and its creator Kim Schmitz aka Kim Dotcom has been arrested in New Zealand. Megaupload lawers are fighting for the relaunch of the site but the scammers got ahead of them – be aware!
The news struck everyone – Megaupload was closed quickly, without any notice, therefore users did not even get a chance to take back their personal files that they have paid to store. Megaupload attorneys claim to be working to get the site back on track but while they haven't reached their goal – scammers try to use this to their own advantage.
What to beware of?
Firstly, scammers released fake news about relaunching of Megaupload. Many different addresses linking to phishing sites have been promoted as the reincarnated Megaupload.com, some of them only have an IP name as their address. We are sure that if Megaupload is relaunched they will at least have a decent site address so do not fall for this scam.
Criminals advise you to beware of...criminals
This may seem a little tricky however it is not. Cyber criminals exploit even the news about themselves as they promote their sites to be allegedly anti-spyware. But the good news is that you can recognize these fraudulent sites. There may be spelling mistakes such as Beware of Pishers.
One thing you can do to test whether the site is legit – enter a wrong password when logging in. If the site accepts your details and claims to be loading – chances are scammers are trying to get the hold of your real login details.
Keep Safe
Keep in mind, that the return of Megaupload (as it was or by any other name) will be a huge deal and the whole internet community will be talking about it – there is no chance you would miss it. We will definitely release a news update when that happens. So for now just try to keep safe and not fall into any scammers' trap.
