It is not surprising that spam emails may be a hint in a bigger breach of data that was done in December 2010 of the Atlanta-based Silverpop Systems. Back then there were numerous emails that compromised 100 big companies and then used to organize phishing campaigns.

This was the best example of how cyber criminals use bunch of spam emails in spreading malware and other infections. Since then, there were no such big breaches, but security researchers warn that cyber criminals are still using the same method of sending mass of spam emails that have malware within.

Recently, security researchers noted that number of email marketing organization web accounts has recently been compromised. Those accounts were also used for sending malicious emails. One such email was discovered in one of Argentina’s companies and it was definitely send from the email marketing company's infrastructure.

Other such email was found in another Argentinean company and the day after cyber criminal compromised one of Australia’s company sites which became their tool of spreading malware.

Security researcher says: „Most email marketing web accounts require basic password authentication. If an account is compromised, the attacker has access not only to an efficient email sending infrastructure and campaign editing tools, but also customer email details too. Even worse, most of the major email marketing companies also integrate with many online CRM services, giving the attacker the additional option to resell an organization's information to its competitors.“
