As email spam start to decrease researchers are discussing the reasons of this phenomenon. It seems like spammers are more concentrated to spreading spam on social networks and mobile channels.
Spammers focus on social networks because they see it is possible to get more responses from users than it was done by spreading spam on emails. Botnets are used for sending malicious content. They are technically able to transfer messages that bluff content from social networking web pages. This works the same as email spam where cyber criminals seek to get recipients credentials.
Cyber criminals then may log in to social networks account with compromised victim’s credentials and send spam via the platform to user’s friends. This is a quite clever way to trick users because social networks and friends that user is connected are well trusted. Once cyber criminals have victim’s credentials they’ll try to get much more private information that may lead them to more money.
If you have noticed your account has been hacked you should assume that every other your account has been compromised as well. It is recommended to use different but strong passwords in every account you have. Do not trust unknown links that you get and be vigilant in any suspicious information you get
