The .ru Equivalent for .cn Domain
By Bryan on February 22, 2010 | Computer Security, .ru, .cn, Symantec, CNNIC, TLDs
On January Symantec announced a drop in .cn spam. This is connected with changes in the domain registration process reported by China's Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC). At the beginning of February .cn spam tottered between 0 and 4 percent of total URL spam.
Moreover, the volume of spam containing the .ru top-level domain from 9 percent rose further up to close to 40 percent on February 8. An interesting thing is that the .cn domains used in the health spam attacks had been replaced with .ru domains.
The main idea why attackers began to use .ru domain is because of complexity to register .cn domains. There are no variation in the spam volume containing other TLDs, but the future is unclear for us. That is why, spammers may try to registering domains that are easily available.
