Nowadays cybercriminals are choosing ways how to spread malware and viruses that they would have more benefit of it. It seems like they are choosing spreading phishing scams more than target specific emails. According to Rohyt Belani from CEO of phishing-awareness-training company PhishMe, spread phishing attacks have much bigger payoff for cybercriminals.
R. Belani comments: „The kind of phishing attacks that are working now involve targeting specific employees at an organization.“ He also claimed that spam filters are very effective and they protect you from getting more spam emails than you usually get. That’s why cybercriminals are trying to do everything to bypass those filters which can detect high volume and mass-blast emails. So in these days, phishers choose five employees and target them.
R. Belani added: „The normal employee at an organization doesn't think hackers would target them. As we saw in the RSA scenario, only 4 people received that email, none of them high-profile employees.“
The best way to avoid these attacks is to verify information you get. Do not fall for emails that give you some discount coupon or ask for your personal information or credit card information. If such noticed, you definitely got phishing email. Check if your computer is protected with security software or make sure that your computer administrator knows about the phishing email.
